Tuesday Work Day 2/9/10

Yet another regular tuesday work day today.  We made some good progress.  I was really looking forward to today and it didn’t go perfectly.  That put me in a real funk.  I’m not sure why I expected it to go perfectly, nothing ever does.  Ohh well.

We ordered two sets of pads from THmotorsports.com and only received one set, despite ordering two.  I really hope they don’t give me any trouble resolving that.  These are not cheap pads.

The rear lines we got on clearance from rockauto were also incorrect.  They had a completely different bend from the stock ones.  Ohh well thats $25 down the drain.

One of the big goals today was to get the suspension, brakes, and new tires on the car.  Rob did a great job prep’ing everything.  These are ebay sleeve-over springs for a crx on some clearance koni gr2/gas-a-just dampers.  All in all, $110 for the complete package.  We were worried that they would drop it too much.  I needs to go down at least another two inches.

Welp, I think we actually raised it.  Good thing they are adjustable!  The bouncing is completely gone now though.  It’s nice and stiff.  We will see if its too stiff :P .

Shiny!  New brake lines (Front only grrrrrr), rebuild calipers, new rotors, new Carbotech XP8 pads.  The rest of the suspension is stock.  The bushings are looking pretty tired.

We also got our rubber in.  We went all out on nice tires.  Considering nearly the entire tire is newbies, this may end up being a mistake.  Dunlop Direzza D1 Star Specs.  190/55r15.  I was worried they would be too narrow but they are a perfect fit for our stock rims.  Two full sets (so we have some spares in case we flat spot or these don’t last a whole race).  Turns out TWO of our spare wheels are bent.  Anyone have any 87 GXL wheels they want to make us a deal on?

A buddy of ours works at a strap company and hooked us up (Thanks jake!).  So far, one of the nicest parts on our car: door limiter straps.  These will prevent the door from opening too far and slaming into our precious body panels.

Measure, drill, rivet, bam done!  Works ok.  The door is a little flimsy there but it will definitely serve its function.  This was a gabe project, good work gabe.

Ryan worked more on our light system.  We mounted the bars and welded some bolts in to hold it.  4 nuts hold both bars on.  That should make it really easy to take the lights on and off.

The goal was to get the seat mounted today.  We made progress but not nearly as much as we hoped.  Next week we might be able to finish it.

Stock rails have been lowered at least another 2 inches.  Sit nearly flat on the floor pan now.  We should have a nice low (safe!) seating position in the car now.

Additional reinforcement plates are going to be welded in under the floor pan here to support the rails.  They still need to be drilled and the area cleaned up for install.

Point of no return on the seat, the drill comes out.

Side mounts done.  This should let us have some adjustment of the angle on the back of the seat.  Getting this setup correctly is important for safety.  Belt angle, hans, and all of that has to be factored in.

Despite my mood, we really did get a lot done today.  I can’t believe we are so far along on the suspension.  We can almost cross that off the list, and that’s a major part of our build!

See you next week.
